What You Need to Know About the 2024 Olympic Games Golf

The men’s and women’s golf tournaments at the Olympic Games are unique in that they each have a field of 60 players playing 72 holes in a stroke play competition at Le Golf National, spread over 4 days, with no prize money.

The winner receives a gold medal, the runner-up a silver and a bronze medal for third place. Xander Schauffele defends the title in the men’s category, while Nelly Korda is the reigning champion in the women’s category.

When is golf in the Olympics?

The men’s tournament starts on Thursday, August 1 and ends on Sunday, August 4, while the women’s tournament starts on Wednesday, August 7 and ends on Saturday, August 10.

Where is golf played at the Olympics?

The competition takes place on Le Golf National, a par 72 course of 7,331 yards. The course opened in 1990 and the natural hills provide fantastic views for spectators. There is plenty of water and the rough is thick and juicy, meaning accuracy off the tee is essential. The Ryder Cup was held here in 2018, when Europe defeated the USA.

How can you look?

Unlike the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LPGA Tour events, the tournaments are not broadcast by Sky Sports. You can watch highlights on the BBC and Eurosport, while the Golf Channel has also secured coverage.

Who has won at the Olympics before?

The men’s event was won by Justin Rose in 2016 and by Xander Schauffele in 2021.

The women’s event was won by Inbee Park in 2016 and by Nelly Korda in 2021.

How do golfers qualify for the Olympics?

For Olympic eligibility, the top 15 players in the world rankings are eligible to compete, with a limit of four players per country, which explains the presence of four U.S. players on the men’s team and three on each women’s team for the U.S. and South Korea. For those outside the top 15, eligibility is determined by world rankings, with a maximum of two players per country if that country does not already have two or more players in the top 15.

In addition, each of the five continents is guaranteed at least one golfer in each event. If a continent does not have a qualified player based on the world rankings, the remaining spots will be given to the highest-ranked golfers from that continent without representation.
