When is National Boss Day? The holiday started in Illiois – NBC Chicago

You may know that today is National Boss Day (and if you don’t, think about it before you go to the office). But you may not know that the day honoring your head honcho actually started right here in Illinois.

According to the website National Day Calendar, “National Boss’s Day,” which falls on Wednesday, October 16, “recognizes the hard-working boss who oversees the workplace.”

“Workers across the United States show appreciation and gratitude to their bosses,” the site said of the holiday. “They also remember their boss’s kindness and honesty all year long.”

The site goes on to say that when October 16 falls on a weekend, it is customary to celebrate it on the ‘nearest working day’.

The holiday’s origin story begins in 1958 in the suburb of Deerfield, the site said, where Patria Bays Haroski worked as a secretary for the Illinois-based State Farm Insurance Company.

Bays Haroski, the site said, has registered National Boss’s Day with the United States Chamber of Commerce to be celebrated on October 16.

“She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday, and at that time he was also her employer,” the site said.

In 1962, then-Illinois Governor Otto Kerner supported the registry and officially proclaimed “Boss’ Day,” the story goes. In 1979, Hallmark Cards introduced Boss’s Day cards to their inventory, according to the site.
