When the College Football Playoffs Rankings Are Released: Playoff Bracket Information

play

The chatter started a while ago, when the weekly College Football Playoff rankings began and the potentially controversial decisions that were inevitable with an expanded field of twelve teams became clearer.

How the CFP selection committee should handle undefeated Indiana, especially after Saturday’s huge Big Ten matchup against Ohio State, has been discussed since the Hoosiers improved to 10-0 for the first time two weeks ago. The top of the SEC also became even more complicated with five teams with two losses. The two storylines have converged under the influence of the CFP and the rankings that will determine whether the SEC can get six teams in the race to compete for a national championship this season.

The next set of rankings will be released after Week 13 college football action, when there will be impactful matchups between the Big 12, SEC, Notre Dame and Group of Five conference playoff contenders. How the top 25 looks this week, especially where the Ohio State-Indiana loser ranks compared to the SEC playoff hopefuls, will be of particular interest. The work of this CFP selection committee is already proving to have more consequences (and more dramatic) than in previous years.

Here’s everything you need to know about how and when to watch the ESPN rankings and the format for this year’s expanded College Football Playoff.

How many teams are in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

Twelve teams will participate in the College Football Playoff for the first time this season, after college football introduced the CFP with a four-team format in 2014. The expansion to 12 teams is planned for the 2024 and 2025 college football seasons. Leaders within the sport have not yet agreed on the framework for the playoffs at this time.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The twelve participating teams in the College Football Playoff round are the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP Selection Committee, and the next seven highest ranked teams.

The four highest-ranked conference champions are seeded one through four and receive a bye in the first round. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where he was among the top twelve teams, or at number 12 if he is outside the top twelve in the CFP rankings. Non-conference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded starting at No. 5.

“As a result,” the CFP warns on its website, “the placement, 1 through 12, may look different than the final ranking.”

For the first round, the higher-ranked team in each pairing (5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, 8 vs. 9) will serve as the on-campus host. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals and match up with the corresponding top-four conference champion based on seeding. Quarterfinals will be played in the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The semifinals – played at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl Classic – will take place from January 9 to 10.

The two semifinal winners will play for the national championship on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
