‘When Times Are Hard, Keep Going’: ‘Baby Reindeer’ Head Encourages Perseverance in Emmys Speech

Richard Gadd, the creator and star of “Baby Reindeer,” won an Emmy Award for his work on the hit Netflix series. In his acceptance speech, he expressed his support and solidarity with those struggling.

Gadd plays struggling comedian Donny Dunn in the series. Dunn is stalked by a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning) over several years and sexually abused by a writing mentor in a fictionalized portrayal of similar incidents in Gadd’s own life.

“This is the stuff of dreams,” Gadd said upon accepting his award. “Look, 10 years ago I was down and out, right? I never thought I would get my life together. I never thought I would fix what had happened to me and get myself back on my feet. And now here I am, over a decade later, winning one of the biggest writing awards on television.”

“I don’t mean that in an arrogant way,” he continued. “I mean it as an encouragement to anyone who’s going through a tough time right now, to keep going. I don’t know much about this life — I don’t know why we’re here, none of that. But I do know that nothing lasts forever. And no matter how bad it gets, it always gets better. So if you’re going through a tough time, keep going, keep going. And I promise you, it’s going to be okay.”
