When will the election results come? When Tennessee can expect results

play

Election officials in Tennessee know it will be a late night for vote counting on Nov. 5.

Some other states have warned that their totals will not be available on election night, but Tennessee is more optimistic.

Knox County Elections Administrator Chris Davis told Knox News that local results should be known around 11 p.m. ET. Long lines at polling places, especially as polls close at 7 p.m., could push that time frame back.

Results for different races come in at different times. Tennessee election officials expect earlier results for the US Senate and House of Representatives race. The presidential total could take longer.

Doug Kufner, a spokesman for Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett, told Knox News that the reporting data is coming in right after 8 p.m.

“We expect unofficial results for all races to come in shortly thereafter,” he said in an email.

That contrasts with extremely important swing states. In Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania, election officials have said their counts will not be completed by Election Day.

When will Georgia’s results be available?

In Georgia, a new law requires results of “all early votes and early accepted ballots” to be reported one hour after polls close, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told CBS News. The state allows election workers to begin counting ballots at 7 a.m. on Election Day.

“That’s 70%, maybe even 75% of all vote totals will be reported by 8 p.m. on election night,” Raffensperger said, noting that overseas ballots can be received until Nov. 8.

In 2020, President Joe Biden won Georgia by about 12,000 votes. The Associated Press did not call the state for Biden until Nov. 19, more than two weeks after polls closed. State officials certified the results on November 20, 2020.

When will Michigan’s results be available?

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said she expects unofficial results in her state to be available by the end of Nov. 6, the day after Election Day.

“But that said, we will always prioritize accuracy and safety over efficiency,” Benson told CBS News. “Because we understand how badly people want these results, we will still ensure the process is safe and accurate before releasing anything to the public.”

Biden won Michigan in 2020 by about 154,000 votes. The AP called the race Nov. 4, a day after Election Day, and election officials confirmed Biden’s victory on Nov. 23.

When will Pennsylvania results be available?

Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Al Schmidt told NPR that it is unlikely a winner will be declared in the state on Election Day, in part because of a state law that does not allow election workers to open ballots until that morning.

Schmidt warned of the potential for false and misleading information to spread as votes are being counted.

“The message is: be patient,” Schmidt told CBS News. “Our counties are working day and night to count the votes of their voters. They do this as quickly as they can, and with integrity.”

Biden won Pennsylvania in 2020 by about 81,000 votes. The AP called the state for Biden on Nov. 7, four days after Election Day, and his victory was certified by state officials on Nov. 24.

States often take days or weeks to announce election results

The growing popularity of mail-in ballots in recent years has lengthened the time it takes for the media to project winners of specific races. It is not unusual for state officials to spend days or weeks finalizing election results.

David Becker, executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation & Research, told USA TODAY that vote counting has never been completed on Election Day in any state in the nation’s history.

The results released to the public on Election Day come largely from that day’s in-person voting, along with early in-person voting and preprocessed mail-in ballots.

“Media outlets generally feel confident that they are calling the race when the partial unofficial results they receive, combined with exit polls and sufficient margins, allow them to project with confidence that the remaining votes yet to be counted will exceed the margin cannot exceed,” said Becker.

But states do not certify election results until days or weeks after Election Day.

“Some states certify the next week, some states take more than three weeks,” Becker said. “All results up to this point are unofficial and partial results.”
