Where will No. 8 Rebels fall in the top 25?

play

Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss Football saw their chances of competing for the 12-team College Football Playoff take a major hit Saturday.

The No. 8 Rebels fell 29-26 to No. 10 LSU in overtime in the Magnolia Bowl in Baton Rouge, handing a team with preseason playoff expectations its second loss in seven weeks. Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier fired a touchdown strike to Kyren Lacy for the game-winning touchdown after Ole Miss settled for a 57-yard field goal by Caden Davis in overtime.

The Rebels held two separate 10-point leads and allowed the Tigers to tie the game with 37 seconds left on a 23-yard pass from Nussmeier to Aaron Anderson in the fourth quarter. Despite entering the season as a preseason favorite to qualify for the College Football Playoff, the odds are now on life support as Kiffin seeks answers for his team heading into the Week 8 bye.

So how far will the Rebels’ loss at LSU drop them in the American LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 rankings before Week 8? Here’s a look at the possibilities:

Ole Miss football rankings: Where will Rebels fall in the top 25?

Ole Miss opened the season at No. 6 in the Coaches Poll with high expectations under Kiffin. The Rebels have spent most of the season in fifth place after a 4-0 start. After a 20-17 loss to unranked Kentucky, the Rebels fell to No. 11 in the polls and jumped back to No. 8 last week after a strong win over South Carolina.

However, this week’s loss hurts Ole Miss’ chances of getting back into the playoff conversation, as Michigan was the only two-loss team entering Week 7 of the college football season. The Rebels are unlikely to fall out of the top 25 entirely, but falling out of the top 20 is a big risk.

The Rebels enter an open week in Week 8 and return to action against No. 16 Oklahoma, which also lost its second game on Saturday. The Rebels have a big showdown against No. 4 Georgia on Nov. 9, likely their last chance to prove they can be a playoff team.
