Black Friday is quickly approaching and many will be getting ready to check items off their Christmas list without breaking the bank on November 29th.

As shoppers swarm into the malls and fight tooth and nail for the best deals, a smarter set is packing at home with the same bargains online.

But whether you’re shopping from the comfort of your couch or in the chaos of the high street, don’t be dazzled by the apparent brilliance of a Black Friday bargain without first checking whether the product is also a Don’t Buy product.

Which one? has compiled a comprehensive list of the deals it believes should be avoided during Black Friday sales, including a flawed fridge freezer and a not-so-‘smart’ kettle.

Based on the thousands of products the consumer magazine tests in their labs every year, here are the top seven deals to avoid.

At the top of the Do Not Buy list is the Beko fridge-freezer, as its cooling and freezing performance was inconsistent and its energy efficiency was poor.

A cheaper and superior alternative is the Fridgemaster, which retails on AO.com for £315.

It has great cooling and freezing capacity and an accurate thermostat, according to Which?

Topping the Don’t Buy list is Beko’s fridge freezer, which retails for £479

Another product that didn’t meet Which?’s expectations? was the Swan Alexa Smart Kettle.

This retails for a retail price of £59 and was rated poorly by the Consumer Champion because it is slow to boil, takes too long to boil over and lacks a filter, meaning it is a poor choice for people who use hard water.

Earlier this year the boiler also won a Which? Shoddies Award for the ‘dumbest smart product.’

Alternatively, shoppers could consider Bosch’s MyMoment Delight, which can be purchased from Amazon for around half the price (£30) of the inferior option.

It’s not as flashy as the Swan model, but cooks quickly and is easy to use.

The third product to avoid this Black Friday is the Kinderkraft 2 in 1 Nea stroller, which performed very poorly in the Consumer Champion’s lab tests earlier this year and had a series of safety issues.

The £349 product had a harness that broke under pressure, a plastic fastener on the rain cover that came off too easily and could pose a choking hazard, and a broken spring in the suspension.

For a better alternative: which one? recommends the Jane Ruler stroller, which can be purchased from Trendybaby.co.uk for £379 and includes the Smart carrycot.

It is a lightweight all-round stroller.

While the Swan Nordic toaster may seem attractive considering it’s been reduced to £49 on sale, which one? advises consumers to look the other way.

The kitchen appliance tested poorly because the toasting slots are not deep enough, leading to uneven or uncooked bread.

Instead: which one? recommends the Argos Cookworks Illuminating toaster, which costs £30 and quickly turns out golden brown toast every time.

The Withings Scanwatch is another bad deal, as it doesn’t track heart rate accurately and has no smart features.

Although consumers will have to pay a little more, which one? recommends them to choose the Google Pixel Watch 3 45mm so that they get a great product that offers accurate tracking and plenty of smart features.

The Hisense HS214 soundbar, offered for £78.17, is another dud.

Which one? found it had poor sound quality and ease of listening issues – it also lacked a good display.

Instead, the Sony HT-S2000 is also available to buy on Amazon and is worth spending a little more for it (£298) as it’s a great value product that produces adequate audio.

7. Tower Optimum VL100 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner (Retail Price – £119)

When it comes to vacuum cleaners, which ones? advises consumers to avoid the Tower Optimum VL100 cordless vacuum cleaner (retail price £119).

This vacuum had trouble picking up dirt from deep within the carpet pile, as well as dog and cat hair.

For this price there are much better options. For example, the Russell Hobbs Glide Pro Plus retails for £105 on Robert Dyas’ website and was tested in Which? considered a ‘solid choice’.

Harry Rose, which one? Magazine Editor said: ‘It can be tempting to buy impulsively during the Black Friday sale, but our list of fake deals shows why it can be worth taking the time to do a little research and save your money.

‘Which one? ratings are based on rigorous and independent testing and individual products that come with a hefty price tag but simply don’t deliver because of the hidden gems that punch above their weight.”

How to get the best deal

Source: Which one?

  1. View the deal price: Use a price comparison website such as PriceRunner or Price Spy to see how much a product previously sold for and determine if the sale price is a good price.
  2. Make a wish list: Some retailers, for example Amazon, let you create a wish list for all the things you want to buy, making it easier to notice when their prices drop. Then you can simply click through your list to see what’s on offer.
  3. Make a list of products and research them in advance: Every year we find products on sale that are not worth buying. In 2022, we even found products that failed our safety tests. Check out product reviews before sale day to ensure you don’t feel pressured to buy a sub-par product.
  4. Use price promises to your advantage: Some retailers, such as Richer Sounds and John Lewis, offer a price you found elsewhere – meaning you can buy from a reputable retailer who offers a good warranty, but pay the lower price you found elsewhere.
