Why I Bench De’Von Achane in Fantasy Football Even When He Plays (in Standard Scoring Leagues)

De’Von Achane is officially questionable for Thursday night with an ankle injury, but there’s a lot of optimism he’ll make the cut. (I know, I know. You’ve heard this before. Look away, Christian McCaffrey executives.)

Achane was seen practicing on Wednesday in a limited way without putting much strain on his ankle. Raheem Mostert has already been ruled out for this match, so that seems to give Achane a lot of chances tonight.

But I’m not going to start Achane in a standard scoring league (PPR is a different story), even against the Buffalo Bills.

The Miami Dolphins’ run game struggled to get going in Week 1, but Achane emerged as a threat in the passing game. While he averaged just 2.4 yards per attempt, he caught seven passes for 76 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. The versatile threat could pose some problems for the Bills’ defense. The Bills allowed six catches for 64 yards on an 85.7% catch rate to Cardinals runners in Week 1.

In PPR leagues, I’d start Achane if he’s available. Those catches could add up quickly as the Bills defense will focus on Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on the outside, and pressure on Tagovailoa could also lead to some dumpoffs.

But in standard leagues where you need a TD to really score points and he can’t play well on the floor, I’d bench him.

With the risk of another injury high, I expect Jeff Wilson Jr. to take a significant portion of the carries and be the priority at the goal line. Unless the Dolphins march right up the field and hit it, the longer Achane plays, the greater the risk of injury. I wouldn’t exhaust that for a score. Wilson has been very effective at the goal line throughout his career. He was also the Dolphins’ most efficient runner in Week 1, with five carries late in the game. The veteran recorded 26 yards on five carries for an average of over five yards per carry.

Also keep an eye on the status of rookie Jaylen Wright in this game. Wright was a healthy inactive in Week 1, but fantasy managers would like to see him get his chance after an impressive preseason.

The Dolphins’ fourth-round pick has the trait Mike McDaniels values most: speed. He’s a perfect fit for this system and is likely just one injury away from a chance. In his first preseason game, Wright ran for 55 yards and a touchdown on ten carries.

Keep in mind that the Bills are not an easy opponent. In Week 1, they allowed just 63 yards to opponents.
