Wildfires are breaking out in New Jersey, fueled by dry, windy conditions

Several wildfires have broken out in New Jersey under windy and dry conditions.

A large wildfire broke out on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Bergen County in northern New Jersey, near New York City. The fire covers 40 acres and is 30% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. No structures are threatened.

On Friday, “conditions will be extremely dangerous for more wildfires and rapid fire spread,” the Englewood Fire Department warned.

New York City Emergency Management said New Yorkers may smell smoke on Friday.

A new wildfire is threatening more than 100 buildings in Burlington and Camden counties in southern New Jersey, outside Philadelphia. The fire is 50% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

In Jackson Township, central New Jersey, the Shotgun Wildfire has burned 800 acres and is 60% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

A fourth fire, the Pheasant Run Wildfire, covered 300 acres (133 hectares) in the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area, a wildlife refuge in southern New Jersey. It is 35% contained and poses no threat to structures.

Fire danger has increased in the Northeast due to the combination of a record dry autumn, wind gusts near 50 km per hour and relative humidity of up to 25%. A red flag warning has been issued from Boston to New York City and from Philadelphia to Washington, DC

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, the Southern California Mountain Fire has exploded in size, spreading across 20,000 acres, destroying homes and causing mass evacuations.
