Winners And Losers From Jones Vs. Miocic Fight Card

The UFC is at Madison Square Garden for tonight’s UFC 309 pay-per-view fight card. UFC 309 features a title fight in the main event. In the headlining bout, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones faces former two-time UFC heavyweight titleholder Stipe Miocic. Meanwhile, in the co-main event, former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira faces the man he defeated to win that vacant belt, Michael Chandler, in a 155-pound scrap. Also on the PPV fight card is an important middleweight matchup between the rising Bo Nickal and veteran Paul Craig. UFC 309 results, winners and losers and more will be updated live throughout tonight’s pay-per-view card.

The main card for UFC 309 streams on ESPN+ pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and early prelims on ESPN+.

*The UFC 309 preliminary card bout between Chris Weidman and Eryk Anders was cancelled on fight day due to a medical issue that prevented Anders from competing.

UFC 309 Main Event: Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic

Jon Jones (27-1-0-1) captured the vacant UFC heavyweight crown in March 2023 with a first-round submission win over Ciryl Gane. The UFC heavyweight title was left vacant when Francis Ngannou departed the promotion as a free agent to sign with the PFL in early 2023.

The UFC initially booked Jones vs. Miocic for UFC 295. UFC CEO Dana White announced that fight in July 2023, saying at the time, “This is the fight that Jon Jones wanted. It’s the fight that Stipe wanted. It is a legacy fight for both of these guys.”

The Jones vs. Miocic fight fell apart when Jones suffered a torn pectoral muscle in training. With Jones off the card, the UFC opted to book an interim title fight between Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich. Aspinall won that bout, and the interim title, with a 69-second knockout.

Miocic (20-4) has not stepped into the Octagon since he lost the title to Ngannou by knockout in March 2021.

Miocic is a two-time UFC heavyweight champ. He is the only fighter to defend the crown three times in a single run as champ. He achieved that in his first title reign. He defended the title once in his second run with the belt, which ended with his loss to Ngannou.

UFC 309 Co-Main Event: Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler 2

Charles Oliveira (34-10-0-1) has been fighting with the UFC since 2010. He won the vacant lightweight title with his win over Chandler and defended the title once, beating Dustin Poirier. He was booked to face Justin Gaethje in his second title defense, but Oliveira missed weight for that fight, which he won by submission, losing the title on the scale.

Oliveira had a chance to regain the belt in October 2022, but Islam Makhachev submitted him and claimed the vacant belt. Since that loss, Oliveira is 1-1, beating Beneil Dariush by TKO in June 2023 and losing to Arman Tsarukyan via split decision in April of this year.

Oliveira is the No. 2 fighter in the official UFC lightweight rankings.

Michael Chandler (23-8) had been waiting for a matchup with Conor McGregor. After a lengthy delay, that fight was booked for UFC 303 in June. However, a broken toe during training camp prevented McGregor from competing.

Chandler last fought in November 2022 when he lost to former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier. Chandler signed with the UFC as a free agent in 2020. He made his UC debut in January 2021 with a knockout win over Dan Hooker.

Oliveira and Chandler met in the main event of UFC 262 in May 2021. Oliveira won that contest via second-round TKO, claiming the vacant UFC 155-pound title in the process.

Chandler enters Saturday’s UFC 309 fight card as the No. 7 fighter in the UFC’s 155-pound weight class rankings.

UFC 309 results, winners and losers will be updated live throughout tonight’s pay-per-view card.

UFC 309 Winners

Charles Oliveira: Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira dominated Michael Chandler for four rounds in the UFC 309 co-main event. His striking was better, his grappling was on point, and his control was dominant, at least for the first four rounds.

Chandler had his moments in the fifth round, but Oliveira worked through some rough moments to regain control of the contest.

Oliveira looked excellent at UFC 309. Yes, he took some unnecessary chances, but he’s always done that. On Saturday night, he reduced those risks a bit by removing himself from those spots rather than continuing to charge forward.

At 35, Oliveira remains an enormous threat in the lightweight division.

Bo Nickal: Bo Nickal went 15 minutes for the first time in his MMA career against Paul Craig at UFC 309. While Nickal looked decent against Craig, but the fight showed that he needs some more seasoning before he’s ready to compete against the elite of the UFC’s middleweight division.

Nickal needs to work on his striking and distance management. Craig, who is not an elite striker, did a decent job in keeping Nickal at distance, but Nickal was able to land with power, by throwing some somewhat sloppy strikes. Nickal came into UFC 309 with a lot of hype behind him. I don’t think that hype disappears after UFC 309, but Nickal’s performance showed he has a lot of work to do.

Nickal moved to 7-0 with the decision win.

Viviane Araujo: Viviane Araujo showed she is not ready to surrender her spot in the top 10 of the women’s flyweight division with a gutsy and smart performance against Karine Silva. Araujo and her corner knew that her opponent had run out of gas as the fight continued. With that, Araujo upped the pressure and forced Silva to compete on the feet, something Silva did not seem interested in doing.

Maurício Ruffy: The 28-year-old Maurício Ruffy has looked good during his three-fight run with the UFC. He is poised and focused with fast striking, good power, an ability to mix up his techniques, sound defense, and a solid fight IQ.

Jame Llontop gave Ruffy a tough 15-minute fight, but Llontop was outmatched throughout the entire bout.

Ruffy struggled to find an opponent for UFC 309, and he might have more problems on that front in the future. He is a competitor to watch in the lightweight division. After the win, Ruffy called out Benoit Saint Denis.

Marcus McGhee: Marcus McGhee should be inside the UFC bantamweight top 15 following his unanimous decision win over Jonathan Martinez at UFC 309.

McGhee showcased powerful and fast striking throughout the fight. However, his inability to absorb the leg kicks of his opponent was a red flag and something McGhee’s future opponents will make a note of.

With his win on Saturday night, McGhee is 4-0 under the UFC banner.

Jim Miller: Jim Miller got back in the win column in his 45th UFC fight, using Damon Jackson’s game plan to get his 21st career submission win. Jackson was faster and more powerful than Miller in the striking department early in the opening round, but instead of sticking with his striking, Jackson decided he wanted to get the fight to the mat. A sloppy takedown attempt allowed Miller to lock in a guillotine choke, which left Jackson with no choice but to tap.

With the win, Miller has 27 career UFC victories, more than any other fighter in the promotion’s history.

David Onama: David Onama found himself in a hell of a scrap against UFC newcomer Roberto Romero. Onama did not seem fazed or flustered by the fast-paced Romero, looking to fight at distance, while employing his technical skills against a tough scrapper.

Obama picked up his third straight win on Saturday, showing his experience and composure in taking over the fight near the end of the first stanza.

Marcin Tybura: Marcin Tybura dominated Jhonata Diniz on the mat at UFC 309. Diniz had nothing to offer Tybura on the ground, allowing him to easily move to full mount and accumulate an enormous amount of damage from that position at the end of the second stanza.

Ramiz Brahimaj: Ramiz Brahimaj looked calm, collected, and unafraid of the striking of Mickey Gall at UFC 309. The reason for Brahimaj’s demeanor became evident when he landed a combination that dropped Gall to the mat, where Brahimaj wrapped things up. Brahimaj picked up his first knockout win under the UFC banner with the victory.

Oban Elliot: Oban Elliot put forth a solid technical effort on the UFC 309 early prelims. During the first two rounds,Elliot mixed up his targets and techniques while chewing up his opponent’s lead leg.

After a relatively slow start to the fight, Elliot found an opening in the third round when he landed a massive right hook that dropped Bassil Hafez to the mat, where Elliot wrapped things up with some unnecessary ground strikes.

With the win, the 26-year-old is 3-0 in the UFC in 2024 and on an eight-fight winning streak.

Eduarda Moura: Eduarda Moura made her UFC flyweight debut at UFC 309 after struggling with the strawweight weight limit. The Brazilian looked good in her first go at 125 pounds, appearing much larger than her opponent, Veronica Hardy.

Moura’s landing percentage on her strikes was not high, but she landed with more power and did more damage in the striking department. Moura was especially effective when Hardy moved forward without taking her head off the center line, allowing her to land heavy counters.

Moura also did a good job on the mat, picking up a takedown in the second round and ringing up 4:02 of control time.

UFC 309 Losers

Michael Chandler: Michael Chandler fell behind Charles Oliveira and stayed in that spot for the first four rounds of the UFC 309 co-main event. The former Bellator champ emptied the tank in the fifth and final round and looked close to getting a finish via strikes, but Oliveira regained control of the round.

Oliveira dominated Chandler for most of the bout, but he never gave up or quit on himself.

Paul Craig: Paul Craig did a good job in showing Bo Nickal is not ready for elite middleweight competition, but he did not do enough to get the win over Nickal at UFC 309. Craig seemed happy to fight at distance against Nickal. The problem with that approach was that Nickal did not have the striking skills or speed to use that distance to his advantage.

With the loss, Craig is on the first three-fight losing skid of his MMA career.

Karine Silva: Karine Silva entered UFC 309 on a four-fight winning streak and looking like she might be ready to take a step up in competition. Silva took a few steps back at Madison Square Garden as her cardio failed her and left her sapped down the stretch against Viviane Araujo, who forced Silva into an uncomfortable situation.

James Llontop: James Llontop signed up to face Mauricio Ruffy on short notice and did his best to give the favored Ruffy a tough go. Llontop got bloodied up but never stopped moving forward and looking to land. Anyone who faces Llontop in the future needs to be ready to go 15 tough minutes.

Jonathan Martinez: Jonathan Martinez struggled to establish his striking early. It seemed as if he didn’t want to give his opponent, Marcus McGhee, an opportunity to find an opening to land with a powerful strike. However, Martinez hurt McGhee with leg kicks late in the second and did more damage in the third with those strikes, but instead of pursuing more leg kicks, Martinez decided to engage McGhee in the clinch, which showed poor fight IQ from the fighter and his corner.

Martinez’s inability to capitalize on those leg kick prevented him from getting the win.

Damon Jackson: Damon Jackson made the mistake of trying to tangle with Jim Miller on the mat. As a result, Jackson’s night ended via submission in the first round.

After the loss, Jackson laid his gloves down in the Octagon, signaling his intent to retire. He has a 23-8-1-1 career record and 6-5 in the UFC.

Roberto Romero: Roberto Romero looked impressive in his short-notice UFC debut against David Onama. He came out very fast against Onama with speedy leg kicks and combinations. He set a fast pace, but he could not shake the confidence of Onama, who has been with the UFC since 2021.

It’s hard to tell what Romero’s upside will be, but he was a game opponent on Saturday, and at the very least, he’ll be a tough out against whomever he faces next.

Jhonata Diniz: With a background in kickboxing, Jhonata Diniz opened his UFC run with two wins in 2024. His winning streak ended with a TKO loss to UFC veteran Marcin Tybura at UFC 309. Diniz showed an enormous lack of skills on the mat, which allowed Tybura to control the fight on the ground and do a lot of damage before the doctor waved off the fight between the second and third rounds.

Herb Dean: Referee Herb Dean should have stopped the Marcin Tybura vs. Jhonata Diniz fight at the end of the second round. Diniz took a lot of damage in that round and did not look ready or able to continue. Thankfully, the cageside doctor waved things off.

Mickey Gall: Mickey Gall was on a three-fight losing skid entering UFC 309. Gall had gone without consecutive wins since his first two fights in the UFC, which came in 2016 against Mike Jackson and CM Punk. With a knockout loss against Ramiz Brahimaj, Saturday night might have been Gall’s last fight with the UFC.

Bassil Hafez: Bassil Hafez looked to throw, and land, everything with power against Oban Elliot, but Elliot’s defense was on point throughout the fight.

Hafez’s tendency to throw all his strikes with full effort provided Elliot with the opening he needed to end the contest in the third round with a powerful right hook. With the loss, Hafez is 1-2 in the UFC.

Veronica Hardy: Veronica Hardy returned from a three-year break in her career in March 2023. She entered UFC 309 on a three-fight winning streak since her return to action. That run of wins ended on Saturday night with a decision loss to Eduarda Moura.

Hardy’s game plan was to use her speed to move in and out of range against Moura, but she struggled to make things work. Hardy did a good job when she went to her opponent’s body, but her focus was on head strikes, where she went 16 for 61.
