With the starters playing, Bucks trail Bulls 68-59 at halftime

play

The Milwaukee Bucks rolled out their regular lineup (sans an injured Khris Middleton) against the Chicago Bulls’ backups on Monday night, but the Bulls took a 68-59 halftime lead thanks to 12-point efforts from Josh Giddey and rookie Matas Buzelis .

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 18 points and Damian Lillard had 13 to lead the Bucks.

Antetokounmpo was assessed a technical foul in the first quarter for shoving Giddey after a pair of hard fouls, then Antetokounmpo was assessed a Flagrant 1 for a hard foul on Buzelis in the second quarter.

The Bucks (0-2) are still looking for their first win of the preseason after losing early first-half leads against Detroit and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Bulls are 1-1.

Does Giannis play?

Yes. He played the first half against the Lakers on Oct. 10, and Bucks head coach Doc Rivers said they would gradually increase Antetokounmpo’s minutes.

Khris Middleton is progressing after injuries

The three-time all-star continues to recover from offseason surgery on both ankles, but Rivers said earlier this week that Middleton “probably” won’t play tonight against Chicago. But he’s hopeful Middleton can play in Dallas on Oct. 17 and/or in the regular-season opener in Philadelphia on Oct. 23.

Does Lonzo play Ball?

The Bulls point guard will not return to the court for the first time since playing in a regular season game on January 14, 2022. Ball, 26, will play in the Bulls’ preseason finale later this week. The point guard has undergone multiple surgeries on his left knee over the years and there was real doubt he would ever return to the court.

Chicago head coach Billy Donovan said before the game that the team hoped Ball would be able to participate in two preseason games, but a bout with COVID-19 forced the point guard to return with some weight loss and conditioning. Donovan added that Ball is back to his pre-illness physical baseline and is prepared to play in the upcoming games.
