Woman who accused Conor McGregor of rape wins civil assault case – and gets compensation | World news

A woman who accused Conor McGregor of raping her has said “justice has been served” after winning her civil case against the Irish mixed martial arts fighter.

Nikita Hand has been awarded €248,603 (£206,000) in damages after a Dublin High Court jury found McGregor attacked her in a Dublin hotel in 2018.

McGregor, 36, made no comment as he quickly left the court after the verdict on Friday evening.

He later said in a statement that he had instructed his legal team to appeal the civil court decision, adding that he was “disappointed that the jury had not heard all the evidence that the Director of Public Prosecutions had assessed”.

He ended the statement by saying, “I am with my family, focused on my future.”

McGregor had previously told the court he had consensual sex with Ms Hand in a penthouse at the Beacon Hotel in December 2018.

“No matter who the person is, justice will be served.”

An emotional Ms Hand said outside court after the verdict that the last two weeks of her civil case against the fighter had been a “nightmare” and had affected not only her life but the lives of her daughter, friends and loved ones.

“I would like to start by saying that I am overwhelmed and touched by the support I have received from everyone,” said the mother of one.

‘It’s something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.

“Now that justice has been served, I can try to move on and look forward to the future with my family, friends and daughter.”

Ms. Hand continued, “I hope my story reminds us that no matter how scared you are, speak up, you have a voice and keep fighting for justice.

“You can stand up for yourself when something happens to you – no matter who the person is – and justice will be served.”

Ms Hand told the civil court that McGregor pinned her to a bed, strangled her three times and ‘brutally raped and assaulted her’.

The jury was told she was left with serious injuries, including purple and blue bruises along her hands and wrists, a bloody scratch on her chest and tenderness in her neck.

McGregor is no longer just known for his sporting abilities

There was not an inch of freedom of movement in this small civil courtroom in the center of Dublin.

The judges spent six hours and ten minutes deciding the future of one of Ireland’s biggest stars.

You could cut the tension with a knife.

McGregor sat stony-faced, taking occasional deep, deep breaths as the clerk declared the jury had reached a decision.

The judge sternly told the public gallery that he would “jail” anyone who caused a scene when the news broke.

It was a sign of the high stakes in this case.

Within 40 seconds, the judge read out the news McGregor feared, and Nikita Hand was determined to get it.

“Did Conor McGregor attack Nikita Hand?”

“Yes” was the answer.

The blood drained from McGregor’s face. His head in his hands.

When the MMA star left the courtroom, he entered a new era. He walked straight to his Bentley, ignoring questions from reporters about whether he felt remorse.

He is no longer a household name only because of his sporting abilities.

But the fighter’s lawyers contested the lawsuit, accusing her of attempting “extortion.”

They pointed to CCTV footage of Ms Hand entering and leaving the hotel with McGregor and a second man, James Lawrence, who they also accused of assault.

Both McGregor and Lawrence denied any wrongdoing. While Ms Hand won her case against McGregor, she lost her claim against Lawrence.

On Monday, McGregor’s legal team told jurors it didn’t matter if they disliked or even loathed the famous fighter, urging them to look at the evidence and not his character.

McGregor and Ms Hand knew each other and had occasionally interacted on social media, the civil trial heard.

Before the attack, Ms Hand had contacted the fighter, who picked her and a friend up in his car.

McGregor “came into her” but she did not want to have sexual intercourse with him because she was having her period, the court heard.
