World Series: Yankees fans who caught Mookie Betts will not be allowed to attend Game 5

The New York Yankees fans who grabbed Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts during Game 4 of the World Series are not welcome back for Game 5.

The Yankees announced that the two fans, Austin Capobianco and John Peter, have been ruled out of Game 5 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for blatant and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts.

The safety and security of players, fans and stadium personnel is the fundamental element of any event held at Yankee Stadium and should not be compromised.

Tonight is the last home game of the year and we want every ounce of our fans’ passion to be visible. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but the exuberance of supporting a team can never cross the line and deliberately put players in physical danger.

The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior exhibited last night. These fans will not be allowed to attend tonight’s match in any capacity.”

The Yankees’ statement about the fans came just over an hour after ESPN reported it MLB had asked the Yankees to ban fans from Game 5.

Capobianco and Peter were called for fan interference in the first inning of the Yankees’ 11-4 home win. Betts made a play on a foul ball near the right foul pole, leaning against the wall to grab the ball. As Betts’ glove hung in the air, Capobianco and Peter grabbed for it and actually yanked the ball loose. It was immediately clear what was happening, so the fans were called for interference and escorted out.

Stadium bans typically follow incidents of fan interference, but Capobianco and Peter told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers that the Yankees said they could return to their seats for Game 5 on Wednesday night. Capobianco also told Rogers that he and the fans sitting in that area like to “joke” about patrolling the area and playing defense.

“In our area we always joke about the ball,” said 38-year-old Capobianco after the match in a local bar. ‘We’re not going to go out of our way to attack. If it’s in our area, we’ll go to ‘D’.

“Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We are willing to do this.”
