    Yankees win ALCS Game 4, 8–6, can eliminate Guardians with a win in Game 5

    Alex Verdugo drove in the go-ahead run with a weak grounder to the shortstop that Cleveland Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio couldn’t clear as he charged in. Pinch-runner Jon Berti scored to give the New York Yankees a 7-6 lead in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series.

    Gleyber Torres followed with a single to center field to bring in Anthony Volpe to increase the Yankees’ lead to 8-6. Tommy Kahnle made sure that lead held, shutting down the Guardians in the ninth inning.

    Cleveland plated the winning run after Jhonkensy Noel walked with one out and Andres Gimenez singled. But Bo Naylor flew to center field and Rocchio grounded to second base, ending the game.

    With the 8-6 win, the Yankees take a 3-1 lead in the series. New York can capture the AL pennant on Saturday night and travel to the World Series.

    Once again, Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase looked human in the postseason after throwing superheroically during the regular season. Clase entered for the ninth with the game tied 6-6, giving up consecutive singles to Rizzo and Volpe. Austin Wells struck out when Volpe stole second base, setting up Verdugo’s go-ahead ground ball.

    Cade Smith was Cleveland’s fourth pitcher in the game, entering Friday’s game allowing just one run in nine innings. But he had a disastrous outcome in Game 4.

    Juan Soto walked and Aaron Judge singled to start the fifth. Jazz Chisholm Jr. advanced them to second and third base with a sacrifice bunt. He then left a two-strike fastball across the plate and Giancarlo Stanton crushed it for a three-run homer to build the Yankees’ lead to 6-2.

    Soto and Wells also hit home runs, beating Guardians starter Gavin Williams in the top of the first inning. Williams seemed to settle down after that, but manager Stephen Vogt pulled him with one out in the third inning.

    Cleveland rallied in the seventh, closing the margin to 6-5 after consecutive one-out RBI doubles by Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor off Clay Holmes.

    But Noel couldn’t repeat his home run heroics against Mark Leiter Jr. don’t repeat in the late inning. He hit a long fly ball down the left field line, but it stayed in the park. Leiter Jr. was added to the Yankees’ ALCS roster before the game as an injury replacement for Ian Hamilton.

    Tanner Bibee starts Game 5 with the Guardians’ season on the line. Carlos Rodon will get the starting spot for the Yankees on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 8:08 PM ET.

      David Fry does it again. He hits a grounder to first base, which is fielded by Mark Leiter Jr. But Leiter can’t throw the ball cleanly to Anthony Rizzo and the ball goes between his legs. That allowed Bo Naylor to score the tying point.
