Yellowstone Season 5A Recap – What happened in Yellowstone Season 5

There are gaps and then there are breaksand the lengthy, nearly two-year mid-season break Yellowstone‘s fifth season certainly deserves the italics. The megahit Western last aired a new episode in January 2023, but that’s all about to change as the series makes its triumphant return on Sunday, November 10.

Of course, one of the tricky things about such a long gap between episodes is that it can make it extremely difficult to keep track of all of the show’s complex storylines and the individual machinations of its sprawling cast of characters. So if you don’t have time to rewatch the first half of Season 5 in full before the second half starts, or just want a quick refresher on all the action, here’s where it left off, and the important plot points to keep an eye on to be held in the show’s possible final season.

John’s political career

Ranch owner and Dutton family patriarch John (Kevin Costner) continued his lifelong quest to protect his land in the first half of season five by reluctantly taking on the mantle of governor of Montana. He immediately cut funding for a previously approved international airport, quashing plans to develop the area into a luxury tourist destination. While that move protected the portions of the ranch’s land that would have been used for development, it also added to John’s ever-growing list of enemies; most notable among them is Market Equities, the company behind the airport plan.

The company quickly sent in enigmatic killer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) to solve the problem. Sarah seduced her way into the good graces of Jamie (Wes Bentley), the black sheep of the Dutton family, who had been installed as attorney general by his father, despite John’s doubts about Jamie’s trustworthiness. It was an instinct that John probably should have listened to, since by the season finale Jamie had called for an impeachment tribunal against John for “robbing” the state by suppressing tourism plans while protecting his own assets.

As of the season finale, the tribunal had not yet officially started, and with Costner having left the series during the hiatus, it is anyone’s guess as to how John’s storylines will end in the coming season.

Beth and Jamie’s confrontation

News of Jamie’s betrayal infuriated Beth (Kelly Reilly), his sister and only Dutton daughter, who lashed out in her father’s defense and demanded Jamie’s resignation. After spending much of the season under the threat of Jamie’s murder of his own biological father being revealed over Jamie’s head, Beth found herself at a stalemate when Jamie pointed out that revealing his secret would also reveal all the people affected by the Dutton were murdered. ranch over the years, ever since Jamie dumped the body at “the train station” – the same plot of land where John and his ranch hands (including Beth’s husband, Rip) dump the bodies of the ranch’s enemies.

Despite being more than willing to get her hands dirty, this was apparently the first time Beth had first learned where the bodies are (quite literally) buried, and after a confrontation with John, she suggested that the best solution might be to give Jamie his. own ticket to the train station. John appeared to consider the idea, but he didn’t respond on-screen, leaving the question of whether the father — who had long stood between Beth and her years-long quest to ruin Jamie’s life — was willing to make a final decision about Jamie. still in the air.

However, while John was debating, Jamie became more certain: he said that Beth would probably try to have him killed. He approached Sarah about some “professionals” who could get Beth eliminated first.

Kayce and Monica have to make some choices

Early in season 5, youngest Dutton son Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) suffered a major tragedy when their unborn son died in a car accident. As the couple tried to move on along with their surviving son Tate (Brecken Merrill), they both struggled with the emotional and psychological toll, especially considering how fraught their relationships have historically been with the other Duttons.

Kayce admitted that he was concerned about a vision he saw during his vision quest in season 4, which led him to believe that he would have to choose between Monica and the ranch. At the end of the season, they discussed the possibility of moving to another house that John had offered them, as a way for them to have something of their own.

A ferry ride to Texas

An outbreak of disease among Yellowstone’s livestock forced the ranchers to decide at the end of season 5A to move part of their herd to the 6666 ranch in Texas, where fan-favorite character Jimmy (Jefferson White) now lives. Because so much of their own livestock was involved, John chose Rip to lead a group Yellowstone ranch hands to keep an eye on things.

The crew headed south in the season finale, but while the operation would likely last months or even a year, the trailer for Season 5B made it seem like Rip was back in Montana, suggesting a change may have taken place in the situation. plans.

Problems with the reservation

Over the course of the series, Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), the head of the local reserve, has been both an ally and an adversary of the Duttons, but in the first half of season five he had enough of his own problems to deal with. he busy. Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher), an advisor who had previously worked with him, had begun promoting a popular, younger challenger to Rainwater’s leadership, forcing him to seek political power.

In the midst of all this, news also emerged that the U.S. government was planning to run two major pipelines through reservation lands, damaging and possibly polluting the tribal home. Knowing that defeating the pipeline plan might be enough to save his position, Rainwater tried to use the situation to his advantage, but his press conference on the matter was interrupted when news broke of John’s impeachment tribunal.
