The Nebraska American football team continues to gain support ahead of tonight’s big game against Colorado.

The Huskers were picked nearly unanimously over the Buffaloes by ESPN’s “College GameDay” crew on Saturday morning, as five of the six analysts — including guest picker Michael Phelps — selected the Cornhuskers. The only member of the crew to go against the Big Red was former Michigan receiver Desmond Howard.

Howard has been infuriated by Nebraska fans since his comments in August 2020, when the former Heisman Trophy winner suggested that the Big Ten Conference “get their ass out of the Big Ten.” The suggestion came after then-coach Scott Frost and former Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos suggested that the Huskers consider finding games outside the Big Ten due to the cancellation of the Big Ten football season due to COVID-19.

Howard had confidence in the Buffaloes’ ability to move the ball against the Nebraska defense, but fellow analyst Pat McAfee continued to heap praise on Matt Rhule’s program. Earlier in the show, the former National Football League punter highlighted the talent of freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola.

Multi-national champion coach Nick Saban chose Nebraska, as did McAfee and Phelps. Kirk Herbstreit and former coach Lee Corso also chose the Huskers, agreeing with ESPN’s “Fan Vote,” in which 63% of fans polled chose the Big Red.

Earlier this week, Saban said Raiola impressed him during his Week 1 performance against UTEP, saying the freshman quarterback “didn’t look like a freshman.”

Nebraska faces the test of the rivalry tonight when it hosts Colorado at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
