Bruins goalie repays the new coach’s confidence in him

After Joonas Korpisalo continued a stellar November run with a shutout in the Bruins’ win over Utah on Thursday, no one would have blamed new coach Joe Sacco for using him again on Saturday in Detroit.

But Sacco just gave it to Jeremy Swayman, who has struggled to return to the level of play that earned him an eight-year, $66 million contract.

Swayman credited his new coach for the decision.

In the Bruins’ 2-1 win over the Red Wings in Detroit, Swayman faced just 19 shots, but he stopped 18 and looked good as Boston won its second straight game.

“I was happy,” Sacco said. “I was happy with his reaction tonight. I’m sure he’s starting to feel better about himself. It’s only a matter of time before he finds his feet consistently.”

Swayman, who came in with a 5-7-2 record and a 3.47 GAA and .884 save percentage, said he took a simple approach to getting himself back to his previous level.

“I just want to do my job, one save at a time and just make good reads and make the first save and put myself in a position to make the second save as well.

He was more effusive about his teammates.

“It’s really great to see the guys in front of me pay attention to detail at both ends of the ice and get rewarded for it,” he said.
