Columbia University veterans celebrate holiday as protesters decry ‘US War Machine’

Protesters refuse to honor veterans on Veterans Day as they plan demonstrations at an Ivy League school in New York City.

The group, Columbia University Apartheid Divest, posted flyers online for the event, which took place at Columbia University.

The flyer reads: “We reclaim Veterans Day for our martyrs while we refuse to honor the American war machine.”

A separate flyer read: ‘We reject this holiday and refuse to celebrate it. The American war machine should not be honored for the horrors unleashed on others. Instead, we will observe Martyrs’ Day in honor of those martyred by the Israeli-American war machine. A day to honor patriotism, love of country and sacrifice of those martyrs.”

The demonstration is scheduled for 12 noon local time.

The National News Desk reached out to the university’s public affairs office for comment on the event.

A spokesperson for the university wrote that the school is aware of a demonstration in small groups.

According to them, a “public safety team” is monitoring the event in case there are “disruptions to campus activity.”

“As always, we are committed to maintaining our core mission to teach, create and advance knowledge,” they wrote in a statement to TNND.

The school currently has more than 700 veterans enrolled, more than all other Ivy League universities combined, Columbia claimed.

Columbia is proud of our students, faculty and staff who are veterans, and we are grateful for their service and sacrifice and the invaluable contributions they make to our community. The university honors its veterans on Veterans Day and every day, and we are proud to participate in the New York Veterans Day Parade, as we have for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, veterans enrolled at Columbia University are celebrating the Patriotic Day with a celebration.

A local lawmaker told the New York Post: “Any attempt to dishonor our veterans is shameful and must be confronted head-on,” said Queens Councilman Robert Holden. “Columbia University cannot allow these un-American terrorist supporters to insult the brave men and women who defended our freedoms.”

He added: “These crazies will not take back Veterans Day – not today, ever.”

A public safety warning was posted on the college’s website. It indicated that the current level of access to campus was “identification only,” which is limited to active affiliated CUID holders and approved guests.
