Detroit Lions, plagued by first-half errors, come up short against Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Detroit Lions lost 20-16 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, missing several key opportunities to change their fate.

The Lions went 1-for-7 in the red zone, with a series of crucial incomplete passes helping Tampa Bay hold on for the win. A costly penalty as time expired in the first half would prove particularly detrimental to Detroit in the four-point loss.

In a bright spot for the Lions, DE Aidan Hutchinson was a big one for Detroit’s defense, recording three big sacks in the first quarter. Hutchinson had five sacks — just two shy of the NFL single-game record, set by Derrick Thomas in 1990.

But Hutchinson couldn’t get the team through the first half alone. The Lions entered the locker room trailing 13-6 at halftime after a frustrating final possession. Detroit quarterback Jared Goff got the Lions in the red zone with less than 30 seconds remaining, but threw an incomplete pass just one down later. On third-and-2 at the Tampa Bay 9-yard line, Detroit was penalized for having too many men on the field and lost the chance to try to score a touchdown after the 10-second runoff that accompanied the penalty.

The Lions opened the second half with a field goal from kicker Jake Bates to pull within four. Following a Buccaneers run, Detroit and Tampa Bay traded touchdowns, with running back David Montgomery racing into the end zone for the Lions and Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield rushing down the field for a 20-16 lead.

Ultimately, neither team scored in the fourth quarter as the two teams traded possessions without really being able to capitalize. A chance for Detroit to take the lead in the fourth quarter was ruined by Goff’s second interception of the day.

Tampa Bay couldn’t score after the turnover, with Detroit forcing a punt on just four plays. The Lions marched down the field in the final minutes, with running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ 23-yard run putting Detroit in the red zone with less than two minutes remaining. Goff, however, couldn’t convert on fourth-and-8, with the Lions losing the ball on downs at the Tampa Bay 6-yard line.

The Lions forced a punt after an incomplete pass stopped the clock. But with less than 30 seconds remaining, Detroit couldn’t get the ball into the end zone. Goff finished the game with three straight incomplete passes, completing 34 of 55 for 307 yards.

Tampa Bay is now 2-0 and is off to a strong start to the season, hoping to win the NFC South for the fourth straight year.
