“Football will have to move a bit to get even close to Anderson and Littler’s semi-final in darts,” says Simon McMahon. ‘Have you seen it? It doesn’t get better. Sorry if you’re not watching, no spoilers.”

Are you saying that because the blog hasn’t been updated in half an hour, I must have been mesmerized by one of the greatest semi-finals of all time? You have nothing against me!

Preamble

Hello and welcome to live, minute-by-minute coverage of England vs. Republic of Ireland at Wembley. Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson may be a qualified dentist, but Lee Carsley’s stint as England interim manager was more like a travel to the dentist. Okay, it has enough in common for a half-hearted analogy. We spent a great deal of time wincing, whining, and worrying, but only belatedly realized that it was much less painful than we feared and that we were in a healthier state than before.

If England beat the Republic of Ireland at Wembley tonight, they will win Group B2 and return – ridiculous phrase – to the top of the Nations League. In fact, they only need to match Greece’s result in Finland, so victory may not be essential.

History will likely be kind to Carsley, who put his big bald head in the line of fire for the greater good. He balanced the present and the future almost perfectly and achieved the necessary results while carrying out several fact-finding missions that will make Thomas Tuchel’s life easier when he takes over in the new year.

All of the above will be hastily removed if England turn this afternoon’s match into a Horlicks. But let’s not go back to the dentist’s waiting room just yet.

Kick-off 5 p.m.
