First Weather Days Alert issued for Thursday afternoon and Friday as strong trade winds impact the state

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii News Now First Alert Weather team stated that Thursday and Friday FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAYS.

The National Weather Service issued a RED FLAG WARNING for the leeward areas of all islands on Friday as the combination of dry fuels, low relative humidity and strong trade winds could create critical fire conditions during the day. This warning applies from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Strong trade winds are expected to impact the state, with some sustained winds reaching as high as 20 to 30 miles per hour Thursday afternoon and Friday. Wind gusts could reach even higher, possibly up to 40 miles per hour.

Winds will increase today as high pressure builds north of the state. Stronger trades will continue through the weekend. Moisture will continue to flow along the trade winds on Thursday, which could lead to windward and mauka showers.

Wind speed and direction

A WIND ADVISORY is currently in effect for parts of the Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe and Molokai. The NWS predicts easterly winds between 20 and 30 miles per hour and even stronger gusts. This warning lasts until 6 a.m. Saturday.

Surf report

A HIGH SURF ADVICE is also in effect for the east coast due to the impending major wind influence. Surfing will continue to build on the east coast and this advisory will last until 6am on Saturday.
