Nebraska football is close definitely to a bowl for the first time since the 2016 season and it’s safe to say that at least this year, no one is particularly picky about which game the Huskers go to. As a bonus of finally being eligible to bowl, however, it appears the sky could be the limit barring an actual playoff berth.

The sky in this case is a New Year’s bowl. It used to be the place people wanted to be because it meant they were one of the best teams in the country. It’s still a coveted slot because most of the country has the ability to watch. And for school administrators, that means more money from the bowl to play in.

Now that Nebraska football has six winsis there a road map where they can get one of those prestigious new years bowling games. Despite the fact that they would only have seven wins if they succeeded there.

The first step to taking such a prestigious gamble for a bowl would be beating Iowa, which is of course no small feat. But the Hawkeyes did some problems under center. If the Huskers offense looks like it did on Saturday, there’s still a chance he could be an underdog with Vegas.

Should the Huskers improve to 7-5 on Black Friday, and the playoffs do what many think the playoffs will do, the Big Ten will likely get four teams in the field. Right now, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Indiana seem to be disappearing.

That would leave Illinois and Nebraska football as the top two bowl teams. Illinois could be as good as 9-3, so they would obviously get the first pick, but the ability for Husker fans to travel could prompt a New Year’s Day-level bowl. The New Year’s Eve Reliaquest makes the most sense. Things got even more interesting, especially since some analysts were already pushing for a bowl match between Nebraska and Oklahoma.
