How Ilona Maher honored Olympic teammates on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ with special song

The Paris Olympics may be over, but Ilona Maher is still celebrating her bronze medal in the ballroom. She honored her Olympic teammates last night with her performance on “Dancing with the Stars.”

The rugby star from Burlington, Vermont danced in the fifth competition round of the show on Tuesday night.

Before Tuesday’s show, each star performed routines honoring influential people and institutions in their lives for Tuesday’s show, which was appropriately named Dedication Night. Dancer Mark Ballas was a guest judge.

Maher danced a rumba with professional partner Alan Bersten, which she dedicated to her Olympic teammates, with whom she won a bronze medal this summer.

“We’ve done so much together and we’ve been through a lot together to get a medal,” Maher said. “We have it not only for ourselves, but also for our country and the girls who come after us.”

What song did Ilona Maher dance to on ‘DWTS’ for Dedication Night?

Ilona Maher and her partner Alan Bersten danced a rumba to “My Way” by Yseult at Dedication Night.

Maher said the song has special meaning to her and her teammates because it played during the closing ceremony of the Olympics.

“At the closing ceremony they performed this song, I still remember understanding what my team and I had done at the Olympics,” Maher said. “They’re my sisters. They’re my rocks. I really want to do this for them.”
