Is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade still happening? What prediction means

play

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been a reliable part of Thanksgiving traditions for generations, but what happens when the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Will the Macy’s parade take place in the rain?

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will go on rain or shine, as has been the case for decades, despite wet weather being forecast for New York City.

Organizers prepare for different weather conditions, but some changes may occur if the weather is not ideal.

Rain isn’t enough to cancel the parade. The floats and performers make adjustments to deal with wet conditions, but marching bands and dancers may change their routines if it is too wet or slippery.

Do the balloons fly in the rain during Macy’s parade?

Rain also doesn’t automatically keep the balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on the ground.

However, wind can keep the famous character balloons from flying. If sustained winds exceed 23 miles per hour or gusts reach 22 miles per hour, New York City regulations require the balloons not to fly.

The current forecast calls for no high winds on Thanksgiving, so the balloons will likely still be visible. Since 1997, when wind regulations came into effect after a few dangerous incidents, the balloons have never been grounded due to high winds.

The parade was never completely canceled due to weather conditions.
