Jon Jones wants ‘f*ck you’ money to meet Tom Aspinall: ‘He needs me’

Jon Jones could fight Tom Aspinall. For a price.

The UFC heavyweight champion registered his first successful defense of that title Saturday at UFC 309, defeating Stipe Miocic in the main event en route to a third-round knockout of the future Hall of Famer. Jones’ performance proved that he is still one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, giving him plenty of options for his next fight.

As the promotion’s interim heavyweight champion, Aspinall seems like a logical choice, but Jones has repeatedly debunked suggestions that he has any obligation to fight the British star. During fight week, Jones went so far as to say that Aspinall is “an asshole” and that’s why he refuses to work with him.

Jones was asked to explain that stance during UFC 309’s post-fight presser.

“He’s annoying to me,” Jones said. ‘He is annoying to me and that is my personal opinion: he irritates me. I understand that you find it entertaining, but I find it annoying. I just don’t like him and at the end of the day, if I give him a chance to fight me, I want to be compensated like that – I want to say it, I want that ‘f*ck you’ money, honestly . That’s exactly what it is.

‘Otherwise my life is perfect without him. I don’t need him at all and he needs me and that’s a good place to negotiate.”

Jones did not provide the compensation that would convince him to fight Aspinall, saying only that it is “a very, very high number.”

After adding another impressive win to his all-time great legacy, Jones feels like he has this chapter of his career under control. He prefers a fight with current light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, but UFC CEO Dana White recently shot that down, saying he would like to see Jones fight Aspinall first.

Jones insists a super fight with Pereira is the right thing to do.

“I’m not really worried about the fight with Tom,” Jones said. “I’m really worried about the Pereira fight. That’s what I want to do. I think if the UFC wants me back, I think this is the fight they will make. I have been very clear about my intentions. That’s what I want.

“I just feel like everyone would understand at this point. If I have to, I will retire the heavyweight belt. Ultimately, give the man what he wants. I’m not talking about Dana directly. I want to take what I think are super fights. I don’t want to fight dangerous newcomers anymore. I want to fight dangerous established champions. So Tom can get the heavyweight championship, I don’t really care. My value is no longer in belts. I created something bigger. I want Pereira.’

Pereira had one of the best years in MMA history. He defended his light heavyweight title with three memorable knockouts and developed a reputation as the UFC’s go-to guy when it came to finding a headliner on a less-than-ideal announcement. “Poatan” has also suggested he would like to fight Jones.

If Jones doesn’t get his way, he’s happy to take his ball and go home.

“Styles create matchups,” Jones said. “I’m sure Pereira has knocked out a lot of heavyweights in his time. He has knockout power greater than his weight. Pereira is special and for me it would be worth fighting Pereira. People can call me ‘a duck’ and ‘a chicken’. I’m going to go home and cash a huge check. The duck and chicken thing is kind of funny.

“That’s pretty much what I want and if it doesn’t line up then tonight in front of everyone profess my love for Jesus and tell the world how proud I am to be an American champion and fight for (President-elect Donald Trump ), man, if that was my last fight ever, then I’m cool with that. That was the one that did it. … I think one of the really good things about negotiating is that you’re willing to walk away from a deal, and that’s the deal I want. If that’s not what the fans want, then I guess I’ll say, ‘Sayonara.’”
