A stunning second-half strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi provided a surprise for Nottingham Forest, who recorded their first win at Anfield in 55 years with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Saturday.

Tricky Trees remain unbeaten thanks to a brilliant counter-attack, started by newcomer Nikola Milenkovic and completed by super-subs Anthony Elanga and Hudson-Odoi, which takes Forest to eight points.

Liverpool were on a perfect 3-0-0 record after losing to Manchester United in week 3, but new manager Arne Slot saw his team concede a goal for the first time in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest are coming off a big win and have also had some decent results against lesser opponents, having beaten Southampton and drawn at Bournemouth and Wolves. Nuno Espirito Santo has retained Morgan Gibbs-White and is showing the Tricky Trees some success and composure at the wheel of what has been a wild ride over the last two seasons.

Nottingham Forest were in control for 45 minutes and the second half started in the same vein. Nuno Espirito Santo knew a draw at Anfield would be accepted, if not praised, but instead chose to go for it.

The Forest manager removed the stability and length of the wingers – Elliot Anderson and Nicolas Dominguez – and brought in creative attackers Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

It paid off!

Nikola Milenkovic’s leaping counterattack turned into Elanga’s superb long-range assist across the pitch for Hudson-Odoi, who fired a pinpoint missile across goal and just inside the low post. The superb pass curled around one of Liverpool’s substitutes, Conor Bradley, and it feels like a masterstroke from Forest’s unbeaten boss.

What now?

Liverpool need to find their finishing boots for a Tuesday trip to AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League. They return to Anfield for a 10am ET Saturday (September 21) clash with Bournemouth.

Things aren’t getting any easier for Forest as they head to Brighton on Sunday, September 22 at 9am (ET).

Super subs score big as Anthony Elanga delivers a super-sharp, curling cross to Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Hudson-Odoi is given some space by Bradley, dribbles centrally and curls the ball low into the far post.

Arne Slot replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold with Alexis Mac Allister in midfield, bringing Conor Bradley to right back. Liverpool started to have more and more chances.

Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez also feature – ahead of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz – while Forest’s introductions of Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi have made them more difficult on the counter.

The Egyptian king is now cooking and has finally shaken Alex Moreno into the box.

A few quick movements lead to a hard shot, but Sels is not deterred and blocks the attempt in the 52nd minute.

Mohamed Salah was busy, but not at his sharpest, and Matz Sels was also well present for the visitors.

Anfield looks ready for this and Liverpool are in full control, apart from the scoreboard. But that is an important qualification.

The Tricky Trees have two players with yellow cards: Alex Moreno and Ryan Yates. The latter is always on the edge of someone else.

Virgil van Dijk is standing right behind forest ranger Matz Sels, and there is also traffic in front of him.

Forest try to move VVD while Trent Alexander-Arnold tries to hit the corner into the goal. Sels saves it off the line.

The first 20 minutes were intense and tense, but here are a few moments.

Murillo plays Morgan Gibbs-White into the penalty area. He dinks wide of the far post, past Alisson Becker but not the goal line or the assistant referee’s flag.

At the other end, Alexis Mac Allister brings on Diogo Jota, but he can’t do much against a tricky but dangerous chance.
