Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier to miss October games with a hamstring injury, Alexander Isak ready for Brighton return

Kieran Trippier will miss the remainder of Newcastle United’s games in October due to a hamstring problem, but Alexander Isak will return against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Trippier was forced off in the 71st minute of Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with Everton before the international break and will be out “for a few weeks”, according to head coach Eddie Howe.

However, Callum Wilson and Lewis Miley are back in training and both have a chance to be involved in the squad against Brighton. The pair will be assessed together with Isak during training today.

“Kieran will miss this match,” Howe said. “He’s picked up a hamstring problem. We don’t think it’s necessarily too serious, but probably enough to keep him out for a few weeks.”

Isak missed the draws with Manchester City and Everton, but after Anthony Gordon was substituted through the middle in those two matches, the club’s record side is set to return to the starting line-up at St James’ Park tomorrow.

“Alex has trained and trained well,” Howe said. “He trained early this week and looked good, so at this point he will be in contention.”

Inside Newcastle Q&A: January transfer priorities? Howe’s position? St James’ Park plans?

Wilson has not played yet this season due to a back injury he sustained during pre-season which developed into a hamstring problem. But the 32-year-old has returned to training and will be gradually reintegrated over the coming weeks.

“Callum has also been training. But with Callum we will continue to assess him day by day,” Howe said. “We have to make a decision about when it is best to reintegrate him into the group. It’s a day to day thing. The big thing with Callum is that if we get him back, we want to keep him with us for as long as possible. So we have to make the right decision.”

Miley is also yet to perform in 2024-2025, but the 18-year-old has recovered from a broken foot and is also under assessment.

“Another player who has been back during the international break has looked really good,” Howe said. ‘He looks like he hasn’t been away. He’s one of those guys, very consistent. It was just great to see him. We have to manage him the right way.”

Sven Botman, who has been out since March with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, is making positive progress but Howe does not expect to see him until Christmas.

“We’re looking beyond that,” Howe replied, when asked whether the centre-back would return to first-team training before the November international break. “But he’s hitting the right power marks, he’s looking really good. We probably won’t see him training until after the next international break. He’s getting closer, but it’s a long way. The reality is that we are probably looking more towards the Christmas season.”
