Redditor spies ‘bad’ toy bug: URL on children’s toy is for adult website, not movie site

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 — Movie merchandise can make a lot of money for IP owners, so it’s a little surprising that the people behind the upcoming Wicked movie haven’t put more care into the packaging of Wicked dolls.

Wicked, the film is very much aimed at a more family-friendly audience, so it was no surprise that one Redditor was shocked to discover that the Wicked Singing Elphaba doll she purchased had the URL to an unregistered website on the packaging for adults.

The Redditor @Iamwomanhearme pour wrote: “I purchased the Singing Elphaba doll and upon inspection the website was printed on the back of the Mattel box, directly above the barcode listed as WWW.WICKED.COM – which is actually an unaffiliated” adult” is NSFW. 18+ website. Not sure if this is a Mattel or Universal fault?

Has anyone seen this yet!?!?”

Social media users on X/Twitter also noticed the error and posted photos.

Malaysians who may be “curious” about the content of the URL (wicked.com) will be disappointed as it is obviously blocked by Malaysian ISPs.

The actual website for the Wicked movie is www.wickedmovie.com, and the dolls in question are produced by Mattel, although they are made in China.

Since the dolls are already on the market and available around the world, a recall due to such a flaw would likely be prohibitively expensive.

At the time of writing, neither Universal City Studios nor Mattel have responded to the boos.

The film is already in theaters, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, with Jon M Chu directing and Malaysian Michelle Yeoh in a supporting role.
