Sheppard out against Raptors, Turner questionable

INDIANAPOLIS – Pacers second-year guard Ben Sheppard is out with a strained left oblique for Monday’s 7:30 p.m. game against the Raptors in Toronto according to a team social media post, further limiting the team’s depth with four others players who have been out for at least several weeks.

Center Myles Turner is also listed as doubtful due to right calf soreness.

Sheppard played 26 minutes in Sunday’s win over the Heat at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, but after checking out in the third quarter he did not return and was sidelined for the rest of the game with an oblique strain.

The Pacers were already shorthanded, with guard Andrew Nembhard out for at least another week with knee tendinitis, forward Aaron Nesmith until at least December with a sprained left ankle and Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman long-term with Achilles tendon tears.

Nembhard and Nesmith are the Pacers’ two best perimeter defenders, and the 23-year-old Sheppard has quickly established himself as perhaps the third best, especially when it comes to defending bigger wings. Belmont’s 2023 first-round pick has started at shooting guard in their absence and has taken on the toughest defensive assignments they would normally have to handle. He guarded Miami’s Tyler Herro in two games this weekend after defending New York’s Jalen Brunson and Orlando’s Franz Wagner earlier in the week. On the offensive end, Sheppard accepted his role of not being ball dominant, but rather running the floor, hitting open shots and otherwise keeping the ball moving. He is averaging 5.8 points per game this year with 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists. In 20.9 minutes per game, he is averaging just 5.1 field goal attempts per game, but shooting 42.4% from the floor, including 40.4% from three-point range. Of his 66 total field goal attempts, 47 were three-pointers.

Without Sheppard, the Pacers must choose between guard TJ McConnell and forward Jarace Walker to complete the starting lineup. McConnell would be the Pacers’ best and most established remaining perimeter defender and he is as good as the Pacers at chasing down ballhandlers. The 32-year-old led the NBA in total steals in 2020-21 and averaged 1.2 per game over his career. However, McConnell is just 6-1, while Sheppard, Nesmith and Nembhard are all between 6-4 and 6-6. The Raptors start a 6-foot-1 point guard in Davion Mitchell, but their three starting wings — RJ Barrett, Ochai Agbaji and Gradey Dick — are all at least 6-5.

The Pacers could also start the 6-7, 235-pound Walker who was drafted out of Houston with the No. 8 pick in the 2023 draft, largely because of his defensive potential with his powerful frame, 7-2 1/2 wingspan. and quick hands that allow him to rack up steals. After playing in just 33 games as a rookie last season, Walker has made significant progress this season, especially as a shooter, as he has knocked down 13 of 28 three-point attempts (46.4%) so far this season. He’s also rebounding at a high rate, scoring 8.1 per 36 minutes and averaging 3.0 steals per 36 minutes, but he sometimes struggles to stay solid and keep opposing defenders in front of him .

Whether they start with Walker or McConnell, they still lack depth, as only seven of the twelve players who could have been considered part of the rotation at the start of the season remain, and only nine of the fourteen full players. time players in general. They will certainly have to ask for more minutes from rookies Johnny Furphy and Enrique Freeman and guard Quenton Jackson, who like Freeman is on a two-way contract. They could be in even worse shape if they miss Turner, who scored 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Sunday’s win. Power forward Obi Toppin served as the second unit center with Jackson and Wiseman out and would likely have to start if Turner is out. Freeman would be relied on as a backup center.
