Summer time is coming to an end. When is it? What you need to know – NBC4 Washington

Fall is here and that means it’s time for the clocks to go back.

Here’s what you need to know:

When is summer time?

Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March, when the clocks jump forward one hour.

The clocks go back one hour – so we go forward one hour – on November 3, 2024, the first Sunday of the month.

Why is there daylight saving time?

Daylight Savings Time was first formally implemented in the United States in 1918 and was introduced to provide an extra hour of sunlight during the summer months.

The measure is intended to give summer beachgoers and farmers’ crops more sunlight when it matters most.

Which states do not follow daylight saving time?

Hawaii and Arizona (excluding the Navajo Indian Reservation) are the only two states that do not observe daylight saving time. The U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands also do not observe daylight saving time.

Can Daylight Savings Time be revoked?

Yes, and there are a number of ways a state can get out of Daylight Savings Time.

First, under the Uniform Time Act of 1966, states may exempt themselves from daylight saving time by passing a law in their state.

A second way is for the federal government to pass a law that eliminates or makes permanent daylight saving time, thus avoiding the need to change the clocks.

Benjamin Franklin gets credit for a lot of things, but creating Daylight Savings Time shouldn’t be one of them.

In recent years, a bill has been introduced in the Senate to make daylight saving time permanent, allowing an extra hour of sunshine in both summer and winter.

The bill, called the Sunshine Protection Act, passed the Senate unanimously in 2022 but stalled in the House.

Does daylight saving time affect your health?

Sleep experts say daylight saving time affects people’s circadian rhythm, the body’s 24-hour rhythm that determines when your body gets sleepy.

When the clocks ‘jump forward’ in March, causing people to lose an hour of sleep, research has shown that there is a spike in fatal car accidents in the days immediately following.

Furthermore, sleep loss is also linked to health problems, including heart disease, cognitive decline, obesity, and a host of other problems.
