Surprising and promising news about season 2 of ‘The Penguin’

It felt like it was almost impossible to get a second season for The Penguin since the events of the show are meant to be a standalone miniseries and lead directly into The Batman 2. show is, both critically and in terms of viewership, well, never say never.

A new interview from The Direct with showrunner Lauren LeFranc is the first time we’ve heard this explicitly not is excluded, along with an explanation of how this could happen:

“I mean, we put everything on the table. I think if we want to do a second season, we have to feel like we can outdo ourselves. We have to feel like there’s still something we can really do.” I mean I really care about all these characters, even though they’re terrible people.”

She goes on to theorize about how it could happen:

“It’s been a joy to write them, even though they’re twisted and complicated and weird and darkly funny. So look, I think Gotham City is just such a fun sandbox to play, and I’d love to continue playing in it , but I think it should just be the right thing. We should never do something just for the sake of doing it.”

Here are some warnings. First off, it’s entirely possible they could just give LeFranc one other planned Gotham TV series that we already know are in the works. Secondly, Colin Farrell has been quite emphatic that he never wants to don those prosthetics again, although he will for The Batman 2, but he may not want to do so for a brand new season of a show. (LeFranc said that despite his public comments, he was a really good sport about it and “a joy” on set).

Granted, we know Oz will outlive The Penguin since he appears in The Batman 2, but if he survives That then maybe it could have a second season after the events of that movie. But as LeFranc says, you don’t want to do it just for the sake of doing it.

This is essentially exactly what’s going on at Marvel right now with Agatha All along, another comic book series that has received a very positive reception from audiences, and now it has too could turn from a miniseries into a show with a second season. Again, it’s doing the same dance with the showrunner not ruling anything out, so we’ll see. This already happened with Best Drama winner Shogun, which went from a miniseries to a show that will have at least two more seasons.

I’m torn. The Penguin is great, but I’m not sure I’d want to see them do it again, especially if Sofia Falcone doesn’t survive the series, since she’s such a big part of why it works. We will know more on Sunday during the final.
