This is when Hurricane Sara could form, models say

Weather experts monitor Hurricane Sarawhich is expected to become a tropical storm soon and could potentially move towards the Gulf and impact Florida. This was predicted last week, but the risk of development has increased significantly since then. The 2024 hurricane season has been quite long, although fortunately Hurricane Rafael largely missed the United States as it turned back toward Mexico. But some models predict we might not be so lucky with the next named storm in November 2024.

When will Tropical Storm or Hurricane Sara develop?

According to various models, Sara is expected to become a tropical depression and then a hurricane this weekend, Friday at the earliest.

As explained by Brian Shields, also known as Mr. Weatherman on YouTube, on November 12, a cluster of scattered showers and storms in the eastern Caribbean Sea will drift westward over the course of the week. Four models (US, European, Canadian CMC and ICON) strongly predict that this system will eventually develop into a tropical depression sometime this weekend. When that happens, it’s officially called Sara.

Additionally, a Nov. 12 report from the National Hurricane Center says there is an 80 percent chance of a named storm developing as predicted over the next seven days. Accuweather believes there is also a high risk of storm development in the region between November 14 and 18. The Caribbean Sea is still conducive to storm formation this late in the hurricane season due to low wind shear and high humidity.

At that point, the U.S. model predicts that Hurricane Sara will move northward, left of Cuba, and then curl toward Florida next week. However, the European model says it will boomerang more sharply back to Cuba. That said, as we saw last week with Hurricane Rafael, the path of storms can change dramatically from day to day. We will monitor this storm carefully as it continues to develop.
