Trump attempted murder suspect laughs and smiles during first court appearance in Florida

The suspect in the second attempted murder of former President Trump laughed and smiled ahead of his initial appearance in Florida court on Monday.

Ryan Wesley Routh, dressed in a prison jumpsuit and with shackles around his wrists and ankles, walked into the courtroom and laughed and smiled about three to four times as he spoke with his court-appointed attorney before the hearing began, Fox News observed.

No cameras were allowed at the federal court hearing in West Palm Beach, Florida, on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

Routh, 58, appeared fully engaged and answered all of the judge’s questions during the roughly 10-minute hearing Monday. He will be formally summoned to appear on Sept. 30.

Fox News is told there could be more federal charges. The first charges announced Monday keep Routh in custody.

On Monday, the judge read out the possible sentences for each charge. The first offense carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and probation. The second offense carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and probation. Routh answered “yes” when asked if he understood the sentences.

The judge also asked Routh if he could afford his own attorney or if he needed a public defender. Routh said he doesn’t have enough income and when the judge asked him, he said he makes about $3,000 a month, has no savings and owns no real estate. Routh also told the court he has two trucks in Hawaii worth about $1,000 each, partially supports his 25-year-old son and doesn’t own any jewelry.

U.S. Attorney Adam McMichael requested that Routh remain in custody, arguing that he posed a risk of flight before trial and citing an alleged attempt at obstruction.

The Public Prosecution Service had requested a hearing on the pre-trial detention within three days, but the defense wanted five days to better prepare. The judge granted this.

The detention hearing is scheduled for September 23 and the probable cause hearing is scheduled for September 30.

Routh was arrested Sunday afternoon after authorities spotted a gun barrel sticking out of the brush at the West Palm Beach golf course where Trump was playing.

Secret Service agents standing a few holes away from where Trump was playing golf saw the barrel of an AK-style rifle poking through the brush along the course, about 400 yards away.

Although authorities initially described the weapon as an AK-style rifle, court documents obtained by Fox News show that officers later found an SKS-style rifle in the area from which Routh fled.

In the sworn statement included in the criminal complaint, an FBI agent wrote that based on his training and knowledge, that type of rifle is not manufactured in Florida, indicating probable cause to believe the SKS-style rifle seized near the tree line at Trump International Golf Course had previously traveled in interstate or foreign commerce. The serial number was “obliterated” and unreadable to the naked eye, the document said.

An officer fired, and Routh dropped the gun and fled in an SUV, leaving behind the firearm, along with two backpacks, a rifle scope and a GoPro camera, authorities said.

According to authorities, a witness saw Routh emerge from the bushes and took a photo of him jumping into a car. Routh was later apprehended by police in a neighboring county.

It was the second apparent assassination attempt against Trump in two months. On July 13, a bullet grazed Trump’s ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
