High winds and increased fire risk led to new fires and an evacuation order in Oklahoma on Monday.

Meanwhile, the growth of the days-long Rush Fire appears to have stalled in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Evacuation near Cushing as flames spread

On Tuesday afternoon, authorities called for an immediate evacuation of areas east of Cushing due to the spread of wildfires in the area. The large wildfire threatened areas from the intersection of highways 33 and 99 east of Cushing and northward.

Residents were advised to travel east or west and not drive into smoke.

Rush Fire Update

The Rush wildfire, which started Thursday, Oct. 24, encompassed more than 30,000 acres and about half of that has been contained. A team from the National Forest Service took command of the fire operation on Monday morning.

“There was really no movement outside our lines yesterday,” Operations Chief Peter Myers said in a video update.

Firefighting continued throughout the day Monday, with multiple wildfires breaking out across the state, and an elevated fire risk remained for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Myers said the focus for Tuesday will be on the north side of the fire, which is not yet contained, preventing it from spreading further north.

The team currently has 16 fire trucks and expects eight more to arrive Tuesday to assist in the effort.
