What time does Trick-or-Treating start and end in 2024?

Trick or treat! Soon you’ll hear these three words at your door – or even help children remember to say them as they go from house to house in your neighborhood. It’s adorable to see the creativity of kids’ Halloween costumes as they go around the block looking for the best Halloween candy. But no matter how cute your family costume is, the neighbors won’t appreciate a knock on the door late into the night before they have the candy ready. That’s why it’s so important to know what time trick-or-treating starts. We’ve compiled the trick-or-treating hours of major U.S. cities so kids can have fun safely and respectfully this Halloween, whether they’re attending a trunk-or-treating event or going door-to-door.

When is the best time to go trick-or-treating?

Most trick-or-treaters head out after dinner at sunset. Sunset may vary by location, but 5:30 or 6:00 PM is a common start time and children must be home by 9 p.m. If you run out of candy after a certain time of night or are “closed” to trick-or-treaters, you can turn off your porch lights. But don’t be surprised if witches and ghosts still show up at your door looking for more goodies!

Before you start knocking on a door, don’t forget to practice important Safety precautions for Halloween such as eating only sealed sweets, avoiding dimly lit areas and carrying a flashlight or wearing reflective clothing. Happy Halloween!
