Winter Weather Advisory issued for Northern Nevada and California

play

A winter weather advisory is in effect beginning at midnight for Lake Tahoe and at 1 a.m. Friday for Reno, Carson and Minden, the National Weather Service warns.

Here’s what you need to know about how much snow to expect and how to check road conditions:

How much snow is expected in Northern Nevada, Tahoe on Friday?

One to three inches of snow is expected below 7,000 feet west of US 395 near Susanville. Six to 10 inches are expected around Lake Tahoe. Higher elevations in Western Nevada valleys should prepare for up to 3 inches of snowfall.

How much snow will we get in Reno?

Although Renoites could see an icy ride Friday morning, snow accumulation in the valley is uncertain.

“This system poses forecasting challenges, with boom/bust potential,” the NWS tweeted Thursday afternoon. In the low snow scenario, there will only be some new snow in the Sierra.

In the high scenario, snow may move to the valley floors, with a chance of a rain-snow mix. However, the valley floors are warm, so accumulations may remain limited even in the high snow scenario.

What is the weather forecast for I-80 over Donner Pass?

As of Thursday afternoon, I-80 was safe. However, conditions may deteriorate. Here you can monitor Interstate 80 chain conditions and road closures.
