Winter weather causes widespread road closures in Northern California

Severe winter weather has led to significant road closures in Northern California, impacting major highways and state routes.

According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), NB I-5 is closed to all vehicles and trucks in Fawndale, approximately 10 miles north of Redding. In addition, southbound I-5 is closed at Edgewood, about 21 miles south of Yreka. As of 11:45 a.m., Caltrans said both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 near Castella are closed due to power lines crossing the lanes.

From 11:00 am National highway 3 is now open on Scott Mountain, just north of Callahan, after trees blocked the roadway. The route is also blocked south of Douglas City due to winter weather conditions and multiple trees obstructing the road.

From 10:39 am, State Road 299 is clear, at Hillcrest, after several big rigs blocked the roadway. The route is blocked at Hat Creek Grade due to winter weather and several drawn out vehicles. In addition, State Route 299 will be open as of 11:22 a.m. just east of Buckhorn Summit after a closure due to a dislodged large platform. Several vehicles veered off the road in Round Mountain, causing even more blockages.

All southbound lanes of US 97 are closed just south of Macdoelen due to snow.

US 395 North is temporarily closed south of Lambert Lane near Standish due to downed power lines as of 11:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities have not provided an estimated time for when these roads will reopen.
