Mountain fire in Ventura County consumes thousands of acres: see photos


“This is a dangerous fire that is spreading rapidly and threatening lives,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said.

A wildfire in California has destroyed several homes and cost millions in damage as firefighters try to get the blaze under control.

The Southern California Mountain Fire has charred more than 40,000 acres of land in Ventura County, about 70 miles northwest of Los Angeles, according to CalFire.

The Ventura County Fire Department is on scene, but the fire is not yet under control.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has been awarded a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to secure resources that will help extinguish the fire, which has forced more than 10,000 people to evacuate their homes, according to a news release.

The fire caused $2.5 million in damage, according to USA TODAY data.

The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.

The fire, which was discovered on Wednesday, is mainly fueled by brush.
